Cartersville police arrested a 41-year-old man Thursday night after a standoff in the men’s restroom at the Red Lobster on Cherokee Place.
Officers arrived around 9:47 p.m. to locate 41-year-old Daryl Max Motley, a wanted subject. Officers found Motley standing just inside the restroom door. When an officer tried to open it, Motley said he had a gun and would kill himself if officers entered. Officers moved to cover, kept the door in view, and ordered Motley to come out with his hands up. He refused and said he would turn himself in later.
Police activated the Cartersville SWAT team because of the barricade and the reported firearm. While waiting for SWAT, officers tried to negotiate by phone through a Red Lobster employee. Motley rejected those efforts.
Around 11:30 p.m., SWAT deployed six less-lethal oleoresin capsicum impact rounds and two CS gas ferret rounds. Motley then came out with his hands raised and followed officers’ orders. A lieutenant placed him under arrest. A search incident to arrest found no contraband.
Motley had outstanding warrants from the Euharlee Police Department for rape, two counts of sexual battery, and false imprisonment. Cartersville officers also charged him with obstruction of law enforcement officers and reckless conduct for refusing lawful commands while employees remained inside the restaurant.
Police notified the general manager about the incident and damage to the restroom door.
