A serious crash Saturday afternoon on northbound Interstate 75 near Emerson snarled traffic for hours and led to a DUI arrest.

Georgia State Patrol troopers from Post 3 in Bartow County say a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado, pulling a 2024 Keystone Cougar trailer, traveled too fast for conditions as it negotiated a curve at mile marker 281—about two miles south of the Allatoona Road exit—around 1:01 p.m.

The driver failed to maintain his lane, crossed into the median, overturned, and struck a guyed wire barrier. The truck and trailer detached, coming to rest uncontrolled in the median.

Debris was scattered across the left and middle northbound lanes and even reached the left southbound lane, causing major backups and delays in both directions.

Investigators determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Troopers arrested 60-year-old Michael Peter Penshorn of Burnett County, Wisconsin. He faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of an open container of alcoholic beverage in the passenger area, failure to maintain lane, and driving too fast for conditions.

The GSP reported no injuries in the preliminary investigation.
