BARTOW COUNTY – A family trip turned violent on Saturday evening when Bartow County deputies responded to a domestic disturbance along Interstate 75, leading to the arrest of a 33-year-old Alabama man on charges including aggravated assault by strangulation.
The incident unfolded around 6:24 p.m. on the right shoulder of I-75 southbound near mile marker 278. A woman, who was driving a 2018 white Chevy Tahoe, reported that her husband, Damani Cade of Shelby County, Alabama, had physically assaulted her. Deputies noted visible injuries, including a busted lip and a scratch on her face.
According to the victim, the altercation began as a verbal argument while the family was traveling to Marietta following their daughter’s soccer game at LakePoint Sports Complex. Cade, reportedly upset over his daughter’s performance, began yelling and swerving the vehicle erratically. The couple switched drivers to calm the situation, but tensions escalated when Cade attempted to roll down a window. When the victim intervened to prevent it, Cade allegedly reached from behind and placed her in a chokehold while she was still driving.
The couple’s daughter, who was in the vehicle and witnessed the assault, corroborated her mother’s account. She described seeing Cade choke her mother and noted the visible strain in his arm during the incident. Deputies confirmed fresh injuries on the victim’s lip upon arrival.
Cade denied any physical involvement, claiming his frustration stemmed solely from the window dispute. Despite his denial, he was arrested at the scene and transported to the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office. He now faces multiple charges, with aggravated assault resulting in strangulation among the most serious.
