- Roosevelt Winfrey
- Nadine Deloris Robinson
A dramatic crash unfolded at around 5:53 PM on Saturday in Cartersville when a white 2014 Cadillac ATS smashed into the Georgia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance building on North Tennessee Street and Felton Walk.
Cartersville Police say 70-year-old Roosevelt Winfrey of Cartersville drove the vehicle south on North Tennessee Street. Winfrey told officers he blacked out and does not remember what happened next.
A witness at the nearby Cartersville Car Wash saw the Cadillac fail to stop at the red light. The vehicle accelerated through the intersection without braking, jumped the curb, and sped at an estimated 75 to 80 miles per hour. The car became airborne before slamming into the brick building.
The witness, a former law enforcement officer, rushed to the scene and helped extract Winfrey from the driver’s seat and 63-year-old Nadine Deloris Robinson of Cartersville from the passenger seat. Robinson told the witness she had been driving the vehicle. A second witness at the car wash confirmed the same sequence of events and observed the first witness remove both occupants.
Accident investigators determined the Cadillac failed to maintain its lane because the driver operated under the influence. The front end sustained disabling damage from the impact.
Both Winfrey and Robinson complained of injuries—Winfrey reported neck pain, and Robinson reported wrist pain. Metro EMS transported them to Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center for treatment.
A towing company removed the vehicle from inside the business and took possession of it.
Cartersville Police obtained warrants for Roosevelt Winfrey on charges of DUI, driving while license suspended, failure to maintain lane, too fast for conditions, and obstruction. Officers also secured warrants for Nadine Robinson on charges of obstruction and permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
