A Bartow County deputy came very close to shooting a suspect before arresting him outside his Evergreen Trail apartment home near Cartersville on Sunday afternoon.
Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in which they reportedly saw a male holding a knife and a female arguing in the front yard. After refusing to drop the knife several times, one deputy held the male at gunpoint until backup arrived. When a backup deputy drew his Taser, the male reportedly started to stand up as if he was going to charge at them. The first deputy admitted that he began to squeeze the trigger but realized that the other deputy successfully deployed his Taser. The first deputy reholstered his gun and cuffed the suspect.
After speaking to the suspect, 20-year-old Kanye Jaquez Philpot, the female, and another witness, deputies learned that the two had been arguing for a while when Philpot, who had the female’s phone, went outside and smashed the phone on the ground several times before the witness called 911.
Kanye Philpot received a charge of criminal trespass and two counts of obstructing law enforcement officers.
