The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Murray County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the drowning of a toddler from Adairsville at Carters Lake on Monday.

The Daily Citizen-News reports that 911 received a call regarding a missing child at the lake after 2 p.m. The body of 3-year-old Malachi Holden was recovered from the water near where his family had been picnicking.

A Georgia Department of Natural Resources ranger told WRCB that Corps of Engineers officers, a Murray County deputy, and family members attempted to save the child but were unsuccessful.

Holden was taken to a hospital, where efforts to revive him continued before the boy was pronounced dead.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Murray County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the drowning.

Authorities said foul play is not suspected.
