Press Release:

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. – Work could begin soon on resurfacing seven state routes in northwest Georgia. Georgia DOT has just awarded a contract to Northwest Georgia Paving, Inc. of Calhoun, Georgia, valued at nearly five million dollars for a project to resurface a total of 53 highway miles in Bartow, Carroll, Paulding, Fannin, Pickens and Walker counties.

As it continues to focus on preserving existing infrastructure, Georgia DOT has recently awarded 25 contracts for statewide transportation projects totaling $54,335,216. This investment in Georgia’s transportation infrastructure yields significant economic benefits for Georgia as well as an improved quality of life for residents. Projects, including the northwest Georgia resurfacing, were advertised for bids in November, bids were received in December and contracts were awarded on January 5 and 6.

Georgia DOT is tackling deferred maintenance with funds generated by Georgia’s Transportation Funding Act (TFA) of 2015. This includes Georgia’s 18,000 miles of interstates and state routes. Since FY 17 began on July 1, Georgia DOT has invested $215.4 million in resurfacing interstates and state routes.

“Taking proper care of our pavements not only extends the life of our roads, but also reduces the cost of driving by lowering fuel consumption and saving wear and tear on vehicles,” Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, P.E. said. “We are now resurfacing on an average 12 to 15-year cycle with preventative maintenance in between, instead of the previous 50-year cycle.”

The northwest Georgia project includes 52.780 miles of resurfacing and surface treatment paving on the following highways and locations:

  • State Route (SR) 20 Spur in Bartow County
  • SR 101, beginning at US 78/SR 8 in Carroll County and extending to SR 120 in Paulding County
  • SR 120 Connector, beginning at SR 120 and extending to just west of SR 92 in Paulding County
  • SR 60, beginning at Old US 76 and extending to just south of SR 515 in Fanning County
  • SR 136 in Fannin Country, beginning at Burnt Mountain Road and extending to the Dawson County line
  • SR 157 in Walker County, beginning north of SR 136 and extending to Rock Creek Road
  • SR 193 in Walker County, beginning north of SR 136 and extending to the Tennessee State line

This new resurfacing project is scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2017, at a construction cost of $4,485,478.  Information on construction and lane closure schedules on this project will be forthcoming before work begins.
