Cartersville first responders were dispatched to a shooting outside the Bartow County DFCS Office located at 47 Brook Drive Monday afternoon at approximately 2:15. Members of the Cartersville Police Department and Bartow County Sheriff’s Office secured the scene upon arrival. They discovered that both the suspect and victim had left the scene. Law enforcement was able to contact the victim, Mr. Alex Flores, at Cartersville Medical Center shortly thereafter. Mr. Flores was in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Through witness interviews and a coordinated response, law enforcement identified the suspect in the shooting as Mr. Stephen Jamal Herring of Cartersville. Ms. Amanda Nicole Young was also identified as a co-conspirator in the incident. The search of a nearby apartment resulted in the recovery of a firearm, which is believed to have been used in the assault.

With the assistance of the Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force in conjunction with the Cobb County Fugitive Task Force, both of these offenders were quickly located and arrested. Mr. Herring was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Mr. Herring was also charged with an outstanding sale of marijuana warrant for an unrelated case. Ms. Young was charged with false report of a crime, obstruction, party to a crime of aggravated assault, and harboring a fugitive.

This incident could not have been resolved so swiftly without the assistance of multiple agencies and the citizens of the community.
