With last week’s series win over Marist, the Cartersville baseball team advanced to the quarterfinals for a matchup against fourth-seeded Spalding. The fans were treated with excellent pitching performances, but Cartersville emerged victorious with a 2-0 win.

Mason Barnett tossed 5.2 innings and allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out eight Jaguars. Junior Gage Morris recorded the final four outs for Cartersville with two strikeouts.

Spalding’s Chase Coppick tossed six, strong innings and allowed two runs (one earned), two walks, six hits and five strikeouts in a losing effort.

Cartersville’s JP Martin scored the first run of the game off an RBI double by Josh Davis in the bottom of the third. The Canes scored again in the top of the sixth when Jordan Wilkie chased home Jake Gooch with an RBI double.

Martin finished with two hits in the game.

Cartersville is now 28-8 on the season, while Spalding drops to 17-17. Game 2 of the doubleheader will be played at Richard Bell Field around 6:20.
