A man was left in critical condition after he was stabbed while assaulting a woman and child. On Tuesday May 9th.
Cartersville Police officers responded to an active domestic violence situation at 163 Etowah Drive in Cartersville around 8:04. Police had received a call from David Lowe stating that his wife Andrea Lowe was being actively assaulted by their roommate Wendell Saunders.
Mr. Lowe stated that on the day of the crime they noticed that Saunders’s behavior had become irregular and had caused some concern. Mr. Lowe advised that Saunders stated he was God and had not been in his right mind. At some point Saunders and his child left the location and walked to a store. Sometime later Saunders returned to the residence without his child and told Mr. and Mrs. Lowe that something happened, and they needed to help him find his child.
Mr. Lowe drove down Etowah Dr., towards Dellinger Park, to look for the child. Saunders left on foot walking in the same direction. Mr. Lowe was about 3 or 4 houses down when he passed Saunders. When Mr. Lowe reached the park, he received a phone call from his wife, and he could hear a commotion in the background. This is when he called 911 and returned to the residence.
Mrs. Lowe stated that when Saunders returned to the residence after Mr. Lowe left, he was extremely close to her and yelling, she stated she could not make out what he was saying, and that Saunders was not making any sense. He then proceeded to grab her by the throat and punched her face and both eyes.
Her child was at home in his room when he heard the altercation, he ran to his parent’s room and grabbed her revolver out of the nightstand by the bed. He then returned to the hall and fired one shot at Saunders. This caused Saunders to stop beating Mrs. Lowe and he turned to the child. Mr. Saunders told the child to go back to his room and when he did not, Saunders grabbed the child by the neck and strangled him. The child then stated that he was punched on the top of his head several times by Saunders.
At this point, the child was able to produce his pocketknife and stab Saunders until he let go of him. This is when Mrs. Lowe and the child ran from the residence and were outside in the driveway when Mr. Lowe pulled in. The Juvenile stated he threw the knife down in the driveway where they were waiting when Mr. Lowe and police arrived.
All three involved were transported to the hospital to receive treatment. Saunders was airlifted from the hospital to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga after being listed in critical conditions.
Saunders is currently facing charges of aggravated battery, 2 counts of aggravated assault, battery, and cruelty to children in the 1st degree.
