The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes defeated the Heritage Catoosa Generals on Saturday night at the Storm Center by a score of 73-35 to advance to the Sweet 16 of the GHSA Class 4-A state basketball playoffs. TJ Horton led the Canes with 20 points, while Jaylon Pugh and Isaac Gridley added 15 and 10 respectively. Cartersville led 43-15 at the half and 62-29 after three quarters of action. The Canes will hit the road Thursday night to face off against Blessed Trinity, which defeated Madison County on Saturday by a score of 55-45.
The Cass Colonels fell to the Buford Wolves in the first round of the GHSA Class 5-A basketball playoffs on Friday night by a score of 82-50. The Wolves got off to a hot start, leading 31-8 after one quarter and 50-21 at the half. Mark Chester led the Colonels in scoring with 16 points while Ashton Burly contributed 12. Cass ends its 2017-18 season with a 17-12 record.
The Adairsville baseball team defeated its intra county rival Cass on Friday night by a score of 3-0. Cass starter Evan Hinton limited the Tigers hitters as he tossed five scoreless innings, striking out 10. Matching Hinton all night was Adairsville starter Kyler Pelfrey who threw six scoreless innings while also striking out 10. Adairsville broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning after Pelfrey tripled and Garrett Mishoe hit a sacrifice fly. The Tigers scored two more runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Corey Nation and an RBI double from Pelfrey. Adairsville improved to 2-0 on the season will Cass dropped to 1-1.
The Cartersville baseball team defeated Lambert in a slugfest at Richard Bell Field on Friday night by a score of 9-8. Cartersville trailed 8-4 when entering the bottom of the fifth, but the Canes’ offense exploded for five runs. Jordan Wilkie finished the night with three RBIs, while Anthony Siegler had three hits, including a solo home run. Levi Ayers grabbed the win for Cartersville. He tossed 2.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Cartersville improved to 2-1 on the season.
