Despite what others may say about him, Cartersville football coach Joey King was left to wonder if he was a good coach following the team’s 38-7 win over Hapeville-Charter 38-7 Friday night.

“I must not be doing a very good job at being a head coach, because we’re doing some stuff that’s not a characteristic of me,” King stated following his team’s fourth consecutive win to start off the 2016 season.

“Just sloppy play here and there, not motivated, a little flat at times, personal fouls and we can’t keep our mouths shut. So I’m going to fix that on Monday. We are where we are in a record standpoint, but not on a team standpoint, so I’m going to fix that.

Cartersville (4-0) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead following at 13-yard touchdown reception from Avery Showell and a 52-yard punt return for a touchdown by Antoine Jefferson. Hapeville-Charter would put seven up on the board on the Hornets second possession of the game to cut into the lead 14-7. Jonathan Cruz hit a field goal to stretch the Canes lead to 10, and Cartersville went into the half up 17-7.

Avery Showell would score two more touchdown receptions to give him three in the game as Trevor Lawrence would throw for four touchdowns in the contest.

Hapeville-Charter’s touchdown in the first half was the first score against the Cartersville defense since Allatoona scored 14 points in the first half in the opening game on the season.

“I thought we came out on defense in the second half and played well. The roles were kind of flipped in the first half. We have to play a consistent four quarter football game of Cartersville Purple Hurricane football.

Cartersville opens up region play next week against Cedartown on the road at 7:30. You can hear that game on WBHF with pregame coverage coming your way at 6:00 with Countdown to Kickoff presented by Peachtree Planning.
