Press Release:

Cartersville, GA; October 17, 2016 – Dr. Maxwell Prempeh, Harbin Clinic Interventional Cardiologist on staff at Cartersville Medical Center successfully performed the hospital’s first percutaneous PFO closure procedure last week.

The surgical procedure is used for treating patients with patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD).  Diagnosed by echocardiogram, an ASD or PFO consists of holes that are located in the atrial septal wall and are typically congenital, but often with symptoms not occurring until adulthood.  A closure device is placed onto a catheter with deployment to the site of the hole and with the assistance of x-ray and transesophageal echocardiogram imaging.

The first patient to undergo this procedure at Cartersville Medical Center remained overnight for observation and was discharged the following day without complication.

This procedure is the most recent addition to the current menu of services offered at Cartersville Medical Center’s accredited chest pain center, headed by Prempeh and Dr. Ankit Patel, Harbin Clinic Interventional Cardiologist.  “We are proud of Drs. Prempeh and Patel for their continued drive to advance cardiology services in Cartersville and Bartow County,” said Keith Sandlin, President and CEO at Cartersville Medical Center.

“Over the last several years we have seen a remarkable commitment to excellence with cardiac services at Cartersville Medical Center,” said Dr. Prempeh. “This has led to elite recognition within the state of Georgia and nationwide regarding the excellent quality of care we provide here at CMC. I am proud to work with an outstanding partner in Dr. Patel and with a highly qualified cardiac staff. Cardiac services at CMC have never been better and we look forward to serving Cartersville and Bartow County completely and with high standards. As we celebrate this milestone at CMC, I hope that the patients we serve will continue to share their quality experience with others in the community.”
