Get ready for baseball as a playoff team from one year ago gets ready to open up their season on Friday in Bartow County.

“We’re very, very talented. This is the best year we’ve had in our three seasons,” said Georgia Highlands head baseball coach Mike Marra. He said that they had four division 1 transfers from Georgia Gwinnett, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State and Mercer. “I like our class this year. (We have) a lot of veteran guys.”

The Chargers will open up their season this Friday at 5 PM against Surry CC (North Carolina) at Lakepoint in Emerson. “We’re excited and February is all home (games); all 25 games are at Lakepoint.”

Marra said that they will look to build off of last season.

“We made the playoffs last year as a second year program and got a playoff win. (We) upset a No. 3 ranked Georgia Perimeter team, so we got a little taste of the postseason.”

He talked about what kind of team they were. “We’re a National League team. I match-up all day long.” He credits former Chicago White Sox, Oakland A’s and St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa as his favorite manager. “We’ve never had studs 1-9 pitching, so we’ve always just played to our strength, which is just getting guys on, find a way to get them over and we’ll find a way to get them in.”

Marra said that they were not a team that was not going to beat you with a lot of offense, but instead, their mantra was pitching. “The 7th, 8th and 9th are where games are won and lost. Pitching rules the day for me. A 9-inning game might take 4 ½ hours,” said Marra.

All of their home games are available to be streamed online through Team1 Sports, which is the official partner of the NJCAA. You can go to GHCChangers.com to view the links to listen to the broadcasts on your phone or computer.
