The Cass Colonels have had a stout defense in year’s past and have waited for the offense to come along. If what new head coach Steve Gates showed on Friday night was any inclination of what is to come, Cass may be vying for a playoff spot in 2020.
The Colonels defeated the Dawson County Tigers 23-7 on Friday night for Gates’ first win as the new Colonel coach. Both teams traded punts early, but a big swing of momentum went the way of the Colonels when Dawson County attempted a 4th down near midfield, but was left two yards short of the first down marker. Cass was able to capitalize off some solid defensive stands. Finally freshman quarterback Devin Henderson found Jaiden Avalos on a 38-yard pitch-and-catch.
The freshman quarterback operated with savvy all night long. He navigated the Cass offense through the Tiger defense and kept putting the Colonel offense in scoring position. Zay Jackson gave Cass a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on a scamper, which helped give Cass a 14-0 lead into the half.
The Tiger defense proved to be even stingier in the second half as Cass was unable to get much traction in the red zone. Kaleb Speights made sure that Colonels walk away with points as he drilled three field goals to help insure a Cass win.
Cass will host Adairsville next Friday night on a game you can hear on Bartow Sports Zone by visiting www.bartowsportszone.com. Kickoff will be at 7:30.
