In humid Cobb County, the Cass Colonels (3-1), heavy underdogs, stepped onto the field against the mighty North Cobb Warriors (2-2), a team favored to dominate. The stands buzzed with anticipation, but few gave Cass a chance.
The game started cautiously, with Cass punting early, their offense struggling to find rhythm. But fortune favored the bold. North Cobb fumbled the ball, and Cass pounced. Seizing the moment, quarterback Brodie McWhorter dropped back, scanned the field, and launched a 40-yard missile to Zeke Helton, who hauled it in for a touchdown. The Cass sideline erupted, and the scoreboard read 7-0 as the first quarter ended. The Colonels had drawn first.
The second quarter saw North Cobb regroup, driving with purpose to the Cass 3-yard line. But the Colonels’ defense stood tall, stonewalling the Warriors on fourth down. The stop ignited the Cass faithful, but their offense stalled, punting the ball back to North Cobb, who took over at the Cass 40. The Warriors capitalized, with Teddy Jarrard firing a strike to Sebastian Easley, knotting the game at 7-7. Undeterred, McWhorter answered back, connecting with Jah Anderson on another 40-yard touchdown pass, reclaiming the lead at 14-7. The momentum swung again when Tremon Buckner scooped up a North Cobb fumble and rumbled 25 yards for a score, pushing Cass ahead 21-7. North Cobb clawed back before halftime, with Jarrard finding Jace Caldwell for a 10-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 21-14 as the teams hit the locker rooms. The third quarter opened with chaos.
On the kickoff, Cass’ Xzaevion Turner jarred the ball loose, stealing a possession for the Colonels. Capitalizing on the turnover, McWhorter threaded a 5-yard touchdown pass to Chase Tatum, extending the lead to 28-14 with under nine minutes left in the quarter. North Cobb responded with a rushing touchdown, but a missed PAT kept the score at 28-20 as the third quarter closed. The Warriors were down but not out, and the tension was palpable.
In the fourth, Cass’ Kalil Charles powered in a 6-yard rushing touchdown, stretching the lead to 35-20 with eight minutes to go. North Cobb refused to fold, with Jarrard hitting Caldwell again for a short touchdown, pulling within 35-27. The Warriors’ defense stiffened, forcing a Cass punt, and with two minutes left, North Cobb took over at their own 20, a comeback still within reach. The Cass defense, battered but unyielding, dug in. North Cobb’s final drive fizzled, turning the ball over on downs at their own 48 with 1:20 remaining. As the clock ticked down, Cass lined up in victory formation. McWhorter took the snap and knelt, sealing a 35-27 upset.
The Colonels will return to action next Friday night at 7:30 as it travels to take on the Hiram Hornets. You can hear the game on Bartow Sports Zone with pre-game coverage beginning at 7:00.
