The Cass offense went with a steady rushing attack in its game against Woodland on Friday night, but lightning didn’t let either team celebrate.

Tay Calhoun capped off Cass’ opening possession with a 1-yard touchdown run to give Cass an early 7-0 lead. The drive was 67 yards in total and took Cass a mere eight plays to get the scoring started.

Logan Nelson did find Santino Jones for a long 50-yard pass play in the second quarter setting the Colonels up inside the Woodland 10-yard line. Unfortunately, for Cass, it committed several penalties forcing Kaleb Speights to connect on a 27-yard field goal. Cass added on to its lead with a 33-yard touchdown run from Zay Jackson, which capped off a 5-play, 80-yard drive and extended the Colonel lead to 17-0.

The third quarter was delayed by almost 90 minutes, as lightning and rain surrounded the southern end of the county.

As lightning struck, so did Woodland out of the gate in the second half. The Wildcats sustained a drive that lasted more than five minutes and ended with a DeMarcus Williams touchdown run to cut into the Cass lead 17-7. But the Woodland momentum was short-lived when Calhoun scored his second touchdown of the evening, which came nearly three hours after his first. That scoring drive was set up after a short Wooland punt that ended up on the Wildcat 22-yard line.

And then there was more lightning. After another 90-minute delay, the game was suspended to resume on Saturday evening at 7:00 with 2:04 left in the third quarter.

Woodland will hit the road next week to play Paulding County in search for its first region win of the season, while Cass will stay home to host Villa Rica. Both kickoff times are set for 7:30 next Friday night.
