Not many thought that the Cass Colonels held much of a chance against the Forsyth Central Bulldogs on Friday night. But Coach Bobby Hughes and his players don’t care what high school sites may think about the team in White with just one game under its belt. Cass, which was a multi-touchdown underdog, upset Forsyth Central 15-7 to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Cass took advantage of several presents from Forsyth Central in the first half, as all 15 points came from turnovers. On its opening drive Forsyth Central turned the ball over just inside Cass territory. A few plays later, Logan Nelson showed off his arm, while Santino Jones showed off his separation ability, as the two connected for a 50-yard strike and the first Colonel points. Cass attempted a 2-point conversion, but it was unsuccessful.

On its next drive, Fosyth Central again coughed the ball up, but it wouldn’t take the Cass offense taking the field for the Colonels to find the end zone. The Colonel defense would scoop the ball up and return it on its own for a defensive score and stretch the lead to 12-0, again following an unsuccessful 2-point conversion.

On its third turnover of the half, Forsyth Central gave Cass the ball on the Bulldog 19-yard line. The Bulldog defense held tough, which forced a 31-yard field goal from Kaleb Speights. The Colonels took a 15-0 lead into the half.

The third quarter saw both defenses stand strong and that continued into the fourth. Forsyth Central finally got on the scoreboard with a short drive that covered a large distance to put the Bulldogs within a score. In past seasons, the game would have gotten away from the Colonels, but not tonight. The Cass defense held off another rally from Forsyth Central and closed out the game to win its home opener in 2019.

Cass will travel to Woodland next week to open up region play and tackle its second Bartow County opponent of the season. You can hear this game on bartowsportszone.com as the Johnny’s New York Style Pizza Bartow County Game of the Week.
