The Cass Colonels (5-1) showcased a relentless defense and explosive offense, overpowering the Cedartown Bulldogs in a commanding 44-17 victory.

The game began with a Cedartown miscue, as the Bulldogs fumbled the opening kickoff, handing Cass prime field position. The Colonels capitalized quickly, with quarterback Brodie McWhorter connecting with Elijah Slocum on a 43-yard touchdown pass, staking Cass to a 7-0 lead just 52 seconds into the first quarter. Midway through the quarter, Cass’s punting unit pinned Cedartown deep, forcing a fumble near the Bulldogs’ end zone. Though Cedartown recovered, the Colonels’ defense swarmed, tackling a ball carrier in the end zone for a safety, extending the lead to 9-0.

In the second quarter, Cedartown showed signs of life, driving into the red zone and converting a 27-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 9-3 with eight minutes left in the half. Cass answered emphatically, as McWhorter fired a 19-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 16-3. The Colonel defense then took over, igniting a scoring frenzy. A 40-yard scoop-and-score fumble return gave Cass a 23-3 advantage, and after forcing another fumble, the Colonels’ offense struck again with a passing touchdown, making it 30-3. The defense wasn’t done, capping the half with a 45-yard pick-six to send Cass into the break leading 37-3.

With a running clock in effect due to the 30-point margin, the second half saw Cedartown fight back. Early in the third quarter, the Bulldogs intercepted McWhorter and returned it 35 yards for a pick-six, trimming the score to 37-10. Undeterred, Cass’s defense forced yet another fumble late in the third, setting up the offense. McWhorter redeemed his earlier mistake, hitting Chase Tatum for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 6:25 remaining in the fourth, sealing the 44-10 lead.

The Colonels’ defense, with multiple takeaways and two defensive touchdowns, proved unstoppable, while McWhorter’s three touchdown passes powered the offense. Cedartown couldn’t recover, and Cass cruised to the final horn, securing a statement win to open their season. Cass will travel to Woodland next Friday night at 7:30 to take on the Wildcats.
