The Cass Colonels (0-2) dropped their second game of the 2017 campaign when it fell to non-region opponent Sonoraville 14-13.
The Colonels for the second consecutive week held an early lead after a 75-yard drive ended with a touchdown pass from Rett to Malik Grimes for a 14-yard touchdown. Cass would miss the PAT, but would have a 6-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Cass would cap a 75-yard drive on a 60-yard touchdown run for Thomas Gilliam. The Colonels would hold a 13-0 lead and many thought that the Colonels looked different after holding Sonoraville to just three first downs and 14 yards in the first half.
Unfortunately, the problems that plagued Cass in 2016 and against Adairsville last week reared its ugly head.
Cass would have a punt blocked that would turn into Sonoraville points after Patrick Moore punched it in from 6 yards out. Cass would then fumble the handoff with 1:49 left in the third quarter, which was returned 35 yards for a touchdown and a 14-13 Sonoraville lead.
Cass had its opportunities, but missed a field goal and had a pass intercepted in the fourth quarter. The Colonels again, would not be able to hold on to their early lead and fell to the Phoenix 14-13.
Cass will be back at home next week when it hosts county and region foe Woodland. This game will be the Johnny’s New York Style Pizza Game of the Week and can be heard on Bartow Sports Zone at 7:30.
