The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes (2-0) defeated the Jonesboro Cardinals (1-1) 24-13 on Friday night.

Cartersville opened up the game with a bang. Nate Russell connected with Kendrick Price on the first play from scrimmage for a long touchdown pass to give Cartersville an early 7-0 lead. The Canes weren’t done in the first quarter, however, as Russell found Jamauri Brice for a score to give Cartersville an early 14-0 advantage.

The teams traded yards and punts in the second quarter as the Canes would go into the half up two scores.

Baylon Long scored for the Canes to give Cartersville what looked like at the time a comfortable lead. The Jonesboro defense, however, was not finished. On back-to-back drives, Jonesboro had a scoop-and-score and an interception returned for a touchdown to make the game 21-14.

Ryan Johnson kicked a field goal for Cartersville to once again restore some order for the crowd at Weinman Stadium. The Jonesboro attack remained stymied by the stingy Cartersville defense, who enjoyed big plays from Logan Shrewsbury and Stephen Rowser. Despite the late surge from the Cardinals, the Canes held on to remain victorious.

Cartersville will host Allatoona next Friday night with kickoff set for 7:30 PM. You can hear the game on WBHF with pregame coverage beginning at 6:00 PM.
