The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes (6-1, 1-1) defeated the Cass Colonels on Friday night by a score of 35-13.

Cass struck first in the game when Brodie McWhorter connected with Devin Henderson on the opening drive. Cartersville was able to answer quickly, as quarterback Paul Gamble ran the ball into the end zone to tie the game. Both teams traded turnovers in the first half, but it was Cartersville that would convert the Cass turnover into points. Malachi Jeffries scored to give the Canes their first lead of the game.

Cass was down, but not out. The Colonels with 26 seconds left in the game scored once more as McWhorter again found Henderson for the pair’s second touchdown of the game. This one, was on a fourth down in Cartersville territory. Cass committed a penalty on the PAT, which is when things began to unravel for the home team. Cass’ next attempt was blocked, but the real damage was about to start. Cartersville moved the ball down the field and with seven seconds left until the half, Gamble connected with Jeffries on a 29-yard wheel route to extend the Canes’ lead to 21-13 with the first half expiring.

The scoring barrage was only beginning for Cartersville as the Canes would score on the opening drive of the third quarter, as a 62-yard catch-and-run from Gamble to Collin Fletcher would take the energy out of Doug Cochran Stadium. The Canes would score again on a 38-yard run by Malachi Jeffries to give the Canes a 35-13 edge before the third quarter could expire.

Cartersville will travel to Hiram next Friday for a 7:30 PM kickoff, while Cass will get ready to host Dalton next week for a 7:30 PM kickoff at Doug Cochran Stadium. You can hear Cartersville take on Hiram on WBHF with pregame coverage beginning at 6:00 PM, while Bartow Sports Zone will have the Cass and Dalton game as the Johnny’s New York Style Pizza Bartow County Game of the Week.
