After a drubbing of Luella last week, the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes football team picked right back where it left off with a 51-0 win over the McNair Mustangs Friday night.

Sam Phillips helped pace the Cartersville offense with three touchdown catches, all of which occurred in the first half. Phillips had touchdown receptions of 14, 25, and 21 yards. The Cartersville defense has been a force early on in 2019 and finally got some points of its own in an impressive way. With McNair back to punt, the Cartersville special teams unit blocked the punt and downed the punter in his own end zone, which, at the time, stretched the game to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter.

Devonte Ross and Quante Jennings added touchdowns for Cartersville in the first half and helped the Canes hold a 44-0 lead after the game’s first 24 minutes.

Jalen Thomas capped off a Cartersville drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:07 left in the third quarter, but the final 10 minutes of the game would not be played following a lightning delay. Both coaches agreed to end the game early and the game was called at 51-0 after just three quarters.

Cartersville, which is now 3-0 on the season, will conclude its non-region schedule next Friday night at Cherokee. Kickoff is set for 7:30. You can hear the game on WBHF with pregame coverage presented by the Glenda Mitchell Law Firm beginning at 6:00 and the Harry Daniel Insurance Post Game Party following the game.
