The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes (4-0) continued their winning ways Friday night with a 38-5 victory over the Westlake Lions (1-2).

The Canes started scoring early when Rico Frye capped off Cartersville’s opening five play 74-yard drive with a 3-yard rushing touchdown. After missing one field goal, Jonathan Cruz took advantage of another opportunity on Cartersville’s third possession. The senior kicker’s 44-yard attempted stayed true and Cartersville had a two score lead 10-0 in the first quarter.

Frye punched in another touchdown on a 9-yard screen pass to extend Cartersville’s lead 17-0. Westlake would make a field goal before Frye could continue his stellar game. The senior running back would find the end zone for the third time in the first half with a 1-yard touchdown run and Cartersville a 24-3 lead.

In the second half, Trevor Lawrence would throw his second touchdown pass of the day as he would hit E.J. Turner on a 26-yard strike to give Cartersville a 31-3 lead. The Canes would score again when Lawrence would rush for the pylon, but fumble the football. Turner would not allow a Westlake recovery, but would, instead, all on the ball in the end zone for a touchdown.

Westlake would score two more points on a safety in the fourth quarter, but the damage had already been done. The Canes extended their winning streak to 34 straight games with a 38-5 victory on Friday night.

Cartersville will have a bye week next Friday but will open up region play on September 22nd in a home game against Cedartown.
