The Cass Colonels (7-2, 4-1) dominated the Dalton Catamounts on the road, securing a 48-16 victory with a commanding 35-6 second-half performance.
The Colonels started strong, methodically driving down the field on their opening possession. After stalling at the goal line, they executed a tush push, with Brodie McWhorter powering into the end zone for a 7-0 lead with 6:13 left in the first quarter. Late in the quarter, McWhorter connected with Elijah Slocum for a 6-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 13-0 with 32 seconds remaining. Dalton blocked the extra point, keeping the score at 13-0.In the second quarter, Dalton capitalized on a Cass defensive back’s stumble, scoring on an 80-yard touchdown pass to narrow the gap to 13-7.
The quarter saw little scoring until the final minute, when Dalton kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired, making it 13-10 at halftime.
Cass shifted gears in the third quarter, abandoning their conservative first-half approach. McWhorter scored on a quarterback keeper early in the second half, extending the lead to 20-10. The Colonels’ defense then forced a turnover when Cam Beauford intercepted a slant pass, giving Cass possession in Dalton territory. McWhorter capitalized, hitting Slocum for a 45-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 27-10 with 5:04 left in the third. Dalton responded with a 40-yard touchdown pass but missed the extra point, making it 27-16.
The fourth quarter belonged to Cass, led by running back Kalil Charles, who broke free for a 19-yard touchdown run early in the quarter, extending the lead to 34-16. Midway through, he exploded for an 86-yard touchdown run, pushing the score to 41-16. The Colonels’ defense sealed the game when Naz Fleurine intercepted a short pass, setting up another scoring opportunity. McWhorter then found Chase Tatum for a 12-yard touchdown pass, finalizing the score at 48-16.
McWhorter led the way with three touchdown passes (two to Slocum, one to Tatum) and a rushing touchdown, while Charles added two rushing scores, including a highlight-reel 86-yard run. The Colonels’ defense shone with two interceptions from Buford and Fleurine.
