The week after being shutout, the Adairsville Tigers put enough points on the board to take Bartow County’s Oldest Rivalry and its first win of the season with a 14-7 victory over the Cass Colonels. In the second week of the season, both coaches walked away from Adairsville High School with things that looked promising and others that needed work.
Cass got the scoring started first after Logan Nelson capped off a drive with a 1-yard sneak into the end zone. The drive got started after a bizarre special teams play by the Tigers. On 4th down the Tigers were set to punt but the ball sailed over the head Tiger punter Emmanuel Lopez. After getting composure, Lopez was able to get the ball off but Cass fielded the ball at the 32-yard line and ran it all the way down to the Adairsville 1-yard line.
Adairsville answered the Cass score with two big runs from Ja’Maury Johnson and Eli Agnew, who scored the first Adairsville points on his 22-yard scamper. The first quarter ended with both teams tied at 7.
In the second quarter, it was Cass’ turn for a special teams miscue. Malachi Gardner blocked a punt and recovered the loose ball. Conner Crunkleton then scored on a 3-yard rush to give Adairsville a 14-7 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, the Tigers would recover an onside kick, but the drive would end almost as quickly as it started as the Colonels recovered a Tigers fumble. The Colonels were not able to convert the turnover into points and thus went into the half down a score.
The second half of the game saw both teams struggle to move the football as the 14 points Adairsville scored in the game’s first 16 minutes would be enough to hold off the visiting Colonels, who got the ball as far as the Adairsville 30-yard line with under four minutes to go, but were unable to convert the good field position into points.
The Colonels will host Forsyth Central next week, while Adairsville will take its bye week. In other county action next week, Woodland will travel to East Hall and Cartersville will host Luella. All kickoffs are set for 7:30. WBHF will air Cartersville and Luella, while Bartow Sports Zone will air Cass and Forsyth Central on bartowsportszone.com
