The Adairsville Tigers (4-5, 3-2) fell to the Gilmer Bobcats (5-4, 2-3) 28-21 on Friday night.
Gilmer struck first in the opening 12 minutes and punched in a touchdown for an early lead. The Bobcats scored again in the second quarter, but Adairsville was able to answer. Just before the half, Braxton Elrod crossed the goal line to put the first Adairsville points on the board.
In the fourth quarter, Gilmer would extend the lead but would get the PAT blocked after a touchdown. The Tigers answered right back as Colt Sanford found the end zone to make a 20-14 game. The Tigers attempted an onside kick and recovered the football and scored a touchdown.
After taking the lead, Adairsville made the controversial call to attempt another onside kick with about five minutes left of gameplay. The Bobacats recovered the kick and took about three minutes to march down the field and score on a 1-yard run from Peyton Chancey. Gilmer scored on the 2-point conversion to make it a 7-point game. Adairsville, with 80 seconds left, couldn’t march down the field and failed to convert a fourth down and turned the ball over on downs.
The Tigers are in action next Friday night against Heritage-Catoosa with kickoff set for 7:30. With a win, Adairsville would clinch a playoff berth. You can hear the game by streaming the Adairsville Sports Network.
