Calhoun scored on its opening possession as Andrew Purdy found the end zone on a 1-yard rush to cap a 68-yard drive. Woodland answered with an impressive drive on its own. The Wildcats started at their own 35-yard line following the kickoff and marched to the Calhoun 18-yard line. It seemed as though Woodland’s 47-yard drive might end in points, but instead fumbled the ball, which the defense recovered. While things seemed gloom, on the very next play, Woodland intercepted a Purdy pass and returned it to the Calhoun 10-yard line. Unfortunately, Woodland would lose five yards on the drive and miss a 33-yard field goal.
From that point on, Calhoun controlled the game. Purdy threw back-to-back touchdown passes in the second quarter as he connected with Emaree Winston for a 7-yard touchdown and Cam Curtis for a 2-yard touchdown. Sandwiched in between those touchdown drives for Calhoun was a Woodland failed fourth down conversion late in the second quarter. Woodland, facing a 4th-and-11 failed to pick up the necessary yardage from its own 26-yard line. The failed conversion turned into a short touchdown drive for the Yellow Jackets.
Calhoun scored on its opening possession of the third quarter as Corbin Fuller capped the 54-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Calhoun continued to add insult to injury as Woodland would start at its own 5-yard line following the Fuller score. Woodland fumbled the snap as Calhoun’s Isaac Brooks took into the endzone for one yard to extend the Yellow Jacket lead to 42-0.
Even as the fourth quarter began with a running clock and a 42-point deficit, the Wildcats showed fight. Instead of punting, Woodland continued to try and muster yards. On a 4th-and-5 from its own 35-yard line, Woodland attempted a fourth down conversion, but fell short. Woodland even forced Calhoun to turnover on downs on the following drive. While the record isn’t what the team wants it to be, no one can question the Wildcats’ fight.
The final Calhoun score would occur after the Yellow Jackets blocked a punt. Dustin Kerns would score a 1-yard rushing touchdown to bring the game to its final 49-0 score.
Woodland will travel to Weinman Stadium next Friday night to take on the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes. You can hear the game on WBHF with pregame coverage beginning at 6:00 PM and kickoff set for 7:30 PM.
