The assistant principal of Rockmart High School has tendered his resignation over a month after being accused in a road rage incident in Rome.

Jay Johnson, age 43 of a Cartersville address was driving on Martha Berry Highway near Berry College on June 27 when he allegedly pointed a gun at a passing motorist, who then called police. He was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated driving.

“In this case, we have several people in the system with leadership degrees that are teaching,” said Dr. William Hunter, superintendent of Polk School District. “We’re hopeful we’ll be able to move someone and not have to increase our budget to accomplish this.”

The school district initially did not take any action as the incident happened in the summer months and awaited the outcome of an investigation by Rome Police. Johnson remained employed until he resigned earlier this week.
