The Cartersville City Council will meet today to hear the second reading of a panhandling ordinance, multiple purchases and the second reading of two rezoning cases.

It is important to note that this meeting will not be taking place at city hall due to elevator maintenance. This meeting will be held at the public safety headquarters at 195 Cassville Road.

Cartersville will be making the appointment of Steve Roberts as the new city parks and recreation director during this meeting.

The panhandling ordinance had its first reading during the last meeting where it was stated that if this ordinance was passed it would target the practice of aggressive panhandling.

The two rezoning cases are smaller cases that were both recommended for approval unanimously by the planning commission. The first was an application is to rezone .86 acres from general commercial to light industrial on Old Mill Rd so that Steel Materials Inc. could expand their business onto the lot. The second application requests to change .5 acres of land at Mimosa Terrace from single family residential to general commercial so that a hair salon could open on the property.

The council will also hear a recommendation for an appointment to the DDA Board. It is recommended that Carrie Barnes replace Justin Owen with Barnes term coming to an end on February 18th, 2027.

A petition to add sidewalks to connect the existing sidewalk at either 260 W. Cherokee Ave or 321 W. Cherokee Ave to Burnt Hickory Road. This petition was submitted by a citizen has been signed by a number of residents to ask for a feasibility study into the cost for installing such a sidewalk.

The largest of the purchases that will be proposed during this meeting is for a replacement road tractor and dump trailer that is used by the water pollution control plant to transport biosolids. The stated best bid submitted was for a total amount of $242,150.00 from Peterbilt of Atlanta. This item will be added to the FY23-24 budget if approved due to the delivery time of 26-30 weeks.
