The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes (8-0, 4-0) grabbed their current state-best 38th consecutive win, as Joey King became the fastest coach to reach 50 career wins in GHSA football with a 63-0 drubbing of Sandy Creek Friday night.

Trevor Lawrence completed 15 of his 19 pass attempts for 295 yards and four touchdowns. He is now 105 yards and five touchdowns behind Deshaun Watson’s Georgia high school record career passing marks.

EJ Turner and TJ Horton both had four catches for a combined 148 yards and three touchdowns, while Rico Frye had 44 yards on 11 carries and three rushing scores.

The win for King gives him a 50-2 record as a head coach; the quickest to reach 50 in GHSA football.

 

The Adairsville Tigers (4-3, 2-2) won a big region game against the Sonoraville Phoenix 35-25 Friday night to improve its playoff position late in the third quarter.

Bryce Burgess had two 1-yard rushing scores in the contest and a receiving score.

 

The Woodland Wildcats (3-5, 2-4) fell to the East Paulding Raiders on Friday night by a score of 41-21.

Justice Carter rushed for 101 yards on 18 carries. Titus Jones and Austin Potter combined for 11 solo tackles and 18 assisted tackles.

 

The Cass Colonels (0-7, 0-3) fell to the Rome Wolves by a score of 49-0 on Friday night to extend their losing streak and remain winless in the 2017 season.

 

Veteran race car driver 66-year-old Mark Thompson of Cartersville made his first start in a NASCAR Cup race in 25 years in Sunday’s Alabama 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. Thompson drove the No. 15 Premium Motorsports Chevrolett. It was Thompson’s second career Cup start. In his debut at Pocono in 1992, he finished third. Thompson did not finish in Sunday’s race.
