Tax Commissioner Steve Stewart encourages all new homeowners, anyone who has moved, or had a name change regarding ownership to apply at the tax commissioners’ office for Homestead Exemption before the April 1st deadline. Anyone owning and residing in their home on January 1st can qualify. State law requires applications to be filed before April 1st of the year in which the exemption is sought.
Homestead Exemption will reduce the amount of property tax you must pay on your residence. Rental property does not qualify for an exemption.
Once granted, the Homestead Exemption is automatically renewed each year, unless the exemption is based on income or your deed as changed.
If you have any questions regarding Homestead Exemption, you can contact the tax commissioners’ office at 770-387-5111.
