The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes (11-0, 7-0) continued their dominating play in the first round of the GHSA Class 4-A football playoffs with a 77-14 win over the Chestatee War Eagles (4-7, 1-4) Friday night.
Trevor Lawrence threw seven touchdowns in the first half, three of which went to Avery Showell, and the Canes would never look back. Cartersville had 35 first-quarter points, which included a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown by Trase Fezzia. Chestatee was able to get on the board with a touchdown reception thrown by Storm Yarbrough to Reggie James, who proved to be a tough receiver against the Cartersville secondary.
But as it has all season, the Cartersville defense proved tough and the first string defense would allow as many points as it scored in the first half, as Cartersville led 56-7.
The second half was quick, as a running clock was in place and several Cartersville back-ups received valuable playoff playing time to prepare for years to come.
Tee Webb threw a touchdown pass in the third quarter to Dominique Williams on a swing pass, and Cartersville fans felt their future looked as bright as their present. Webb would throw another touchdown pass, this time in the fourth quarter, to Marko Dudley to give the Canes 70 points in the contest. Not all was good from the second-team, as a punt was blocked late in the third quarter by Chestatee and returned for a touchdown.
But like it has so many times before, the Canes defense prevailed and another opponent was sent home with a loss. Cartersville will play Burke County next week at Weinman Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 7:30.
The No. 2 Georgia Highlands College Men’s Basketball team improved to 6-0 on the season with a 118-101 defeat of the No. 7 Cape Fear College Seadevils. Cape Fear got out of the gate early leading 14-6 in the first half but that changed quickly with the high-pressure press that the Chargers are known for. The two that have carried the Chargers in the early part of the schedule continued to do so, as Ty’Lik Evans had a stellar night with 25 points, 8 assists, and 5 steals and Kyvon Davenport with 23 points, and 10 rebounds. Donovan Ham also stepped up with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
The Chargers will be at the Corral on Tuesday night vs the Fort Benning Patriots for a special Veterans Game. All veterans in attendance will be admitted free and will receive a free commemorative t-shirt with tip-off set for 7:30pm.
The Lady Chargers fell to Snead State at the buzzer 68-67. That Lady Chargers were up 7 points at the half and were up 12 with 6 minutes to go but could not hang on. The game turned down the stretch and with 18 seconds to go the Lady Chargers were up by two. Snead forced a miss and rebounded the ball and tied the game up. Snead had another stop on defense and hit a 3 at the buzzer to close out the win. The Lady Chargers are now 2-2 on the season.
The Chattahoochee Tech men’s and women’s basketball teams also won over the weekend and improved to 5-0 on the season.
