The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes (8-0, 4-0) grabbed their current state-best 38th consecutive win, as Joey King became the fastest coach to reach 50 career wins in GHSA football with a 63-0 drubbing of Sandy Creek Friday night.

The game started quick for Cartersville, as Trevor Lawrence took the first snap 77 yards to the Sandy Creek 8-yard line. A few plays later, Terry Berdin scored on a 2-yard jet sweep to give Cartersville an early 7-0 lead. On its next drive, Lawrence threw a touchdown pass to J’Kobe Orr with 7:54 left in the first quarter to give the Canes a 14-0 lead. Rico Frye would score on a 1-yard rush on the ensuing possession with 4:09 left to give Cartersville a 21-0 lead.

On the first play in the second quarter, Lawrence would connect with EJ Turner for a 36-yard touchdown grab to hold a 28-0 lead. Lawrence would throw two touchdown passes to TJ Horton of 30 yards and three yards to give him four touchdown passes in the first half. Frye would add two more rushing scores to give him three touchdowns in the first half, two of which came in the second quarter.

Entering the half, Cartersville led 56-0.

Lawrence would finish the game with 284 passing yards on 15 completions and four touchdowns. He also had 81 yards on four carries. Turner and Horton both had four catches for a combined 148 yards and three touchdowns, while Frye had 44 yards on 11 carries.

The win for King gives him a 50-2 record as a head coach; the quickest to reach 50 in GHSA football.

Cartersville will host Chapel Hill next week at Weinman Stadium with kickoff set for 7:30 PM.
