Work is soon to begin on widening State Route (SR) 140 in Floyd and Bartow counties. Georgia DOT has just awarded a contract to G P Enterprises, Inc. of Auburn, Georgia, valued at nearly 57 million dollars for a construction project to widen six miles on the highway.

The project includes the widening of 6.2 miles on SR 140 beginning at SR 53 in Floyd County and extending to just west of Oothkalooga Creek. The roadway will be widened from 2 to 4 lanes with a 44-foot grassed median. The project will transition from the 4 lanes with 44-foot grassed median to an urban section with 4 lanes and a 20-foot raised concrete median at the end of the project.

This construction project is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2021, at a construction cost of $56,489,887.   Information on construction and lane closure schedules on this project will be forthcoming before work begins.

SR 140 serves as a Surface Transportation Assistance Act (STAA) truck route providing access to I-75. It also serves as a local school bus route. The area is witnessing fast economic development and even faster increases in traffic volume. The widening of SR 140 will accommodate both the current and projected traffic along the corridor. it will help improve the flow of traffic and make it safer along the corridor.
