May 27, 2024
Cartersville May, 27th, 2024 — American Legion Post 42 (Carl Boyd) will host our annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Monday, 27 May 2024 at 525 Martin Luther King Drive (American Legion Grounds) in Cartersville, GA. This ceremony will honor fallen Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Coast Guard from all American Wars and conflicts. The ceremony starts promptly at 10 a.m., so arrive early to get the best seats. This ceremony culminates a week of commemorative events that include placing American flags on Veteran gravesites at Oak Hill and Sunset Memorial Garden cemeteries and displaying a Poppy Honor wall to honor or memorialize veterans.
The ceremony will consist of a Rifle salute and Taps performed by the American Legion Honor Guard, playing of Service songs and recognition of service members, Guest speakers, and short remarks. Following the ceremony we’ll conduct a short tour of the American Legion Home and the American Legion Auxiliary will serve refreshments.
The Auxiliary will create “bright red” Poppy Plates to honor local individual servicemen and women and display the Poppy Plates on an Honor Wall along MLK Jr. Blvd during the Memorial Day weekend. The Poppy has become an internally recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain. Poppies are never sold. Each year the American Legion family distributes poppies with a request that the person receiving the poppy make a donation. The Auxiliary will accept $5 donations for custom-made individual Poppy Plates to honor both living and past Veterans on Friday, 24 May, and Saturday, 25 May at the American Legion. Proceeds support Bartow County Veteran’s programs, including PTSD support, Veteran’s Suicide prevention, VA Claims support, and other Veteran programs.
Finally, each Flag Day, we retire distressed American Flags for the public. Individuals may drop off distressed American Flags that require retirement due to age, condition or discoloration, during the Memorial Day ceremony. Flags will be retired on Flag Day, Friday, 14 June 2024. We look forward to a great event and a special time to honor our fallen heroes. We are truly blessed to live in a city so Veteran friendly and supportive.
