The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes football team advanced to the third round of the GHSA Class 4-A playoffs on Friday night, with a 35-14 win over Burke County. The Canes will next travel to Woodward Academy this Friday night, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30.

High school basketball is back within Bartow County with four local schools getting their seasons started over the weekend. Friday night, the Excel boys team fell to East Paulding by a score of 100-27, while the Cass boys team beat Armuchee 57-33. The Excel Lady Eagles were more successful as they beat East Paulding 47-46. The Cass Lady Colonels beat Armuchee 43-38.

Woodland and Adairsville faced off in the first intra-county basketball game of the season on Saturday. The Woodland Boys walked away with a last minute 52-49 victory, while the Lady Tigers were victorious in their match-up against the Lady Cats 65-38.

In collegiate basketball from over the weekend, Georgia Highlands won two games, while Chattahoochee Tech split two games in a tournament held at Georgia Highlands. The Chargers beat Faith Baptist Christian Academy 105-97 Friday night and trounced Middle Georgia 109-60 on Saturday. The Chattahoochee Tech Eagles beat Middle Georgia Prep 115-90 on Friday before falling to ABI Saturday by a score of 102-101 in overtime. The Chargers are now 8-0 on the season and the Eagles are now 7-1.

In women’s collegiate basketball, the Georgia Highlands Lady Chargers dropped two games over the weekend as they fell to Tallahassee Community College 85-68 on Friday and Chipola College76-53 on Saturday. Georgia Highlands is now 2-4 on the season.

Today in basketball, Excel will host South Paulding at 4 PM and Woodland will host Gordon Central at 6 pM.

Tomorrow in basketball, Excel will host Adairsville at 6 PM.
