Georgia Pet T.A.I.L.S, an animal rescue organization in North Georgia (Bartow County), is looking for answers in connection to a dog found emaciated and allegedly stabbed in Rydal, Ga.
GPT responded to a call on Dec. 20 regarding a wounded and malnourished dog that had been roaming the streets in a neighborhood in Rydal, Ga. Upon rescue, the dog was unable to stand due to being in such pain. GPT Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Workman said that the rescue team first noticed wounds that may have indicated the dog had been shot.
“We noticed puncture wounds on either side of his neck and either side of his elbow, and initially thought it might have been a BB gun,” Workman said. “From the get-go, you could tell he was in a lot of pain. He didn’t walk the whole first night we had him.”
He was taken immediately to Calhoun Pet Care but was very “shocky” so the decision was made to give him antibiotics & an anti-inflammatory until he was more stable. He was then moved to our co-owner/foster home. The next day he cried in pain & was taken to Tiger Tails Animal Hospital in Duluth, and upon examination, the doctors concluded that the wounds were too localized to be a gunshot wound.
“Dr. Kim told us that whatever happened was very precise, and close range,” Workman said. “An item such as a screwdriver, or ice pick was likely used.”
The dog weighed 46 pounds when he was found, but according to the veterinarian, is a large breed dog that should weigh 70 to 80 pounds. His ulna (elbow) is completely shattered and he will need surgery, and quite possibly an amputation.
“Where the front leg is broken makes it nearly impossible to save the leg, but we sent the x-rays to Dr. Ocean at North Georgia Veterinary Specialists to determine what can be done,” Workman said.
If anyone knows what may have happened to this dog, they are encouraged to contact local police departments and Georgia Pet T.A.I.L.S.
The dog has been named Spirit in honor of the Holidays. He doesnt have any Christmas spirit & we are going to give him his SPIRIT back! Georgia Pet T.A.I.L.S is requesting donations to cover the cost of Spirit’s surgery.
