The Cobb County Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit in conjunction with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office and the Cobb County District Attorney’s Cold Case Unit have arrested an individual for a murder, which was discovered on January 12, 1991.

According to investigators, over 23 years ago, the (partially clothed) body of 37 year old Yvonne Weems of Atlanta was discovered deceased, in a recreational area off Lake Acworth Drive in Acworth.  At the time, investigators believed that not only had she been shot to death, but it appeared as though she had been sexually assaulted.

Based on DNA evidence, detectives from the Cobb County Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit identified a suspect in the cold case, as Investigators have charged 63 year old George Gengarelly of Hernando, Florida with Murder, Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Sodomy, Rape, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Address records showed that Gengarelly lived in Bartow County at the time of Weems’ death. His Adairsville address was about 25 miles north of the recreation area where the woman’s body was found.

George Gengarelly is currently being held (awaiting extradition back to Cobb County) in the Citrus County Jail.
