The Cass Colonels hot start to 2019 continued on Friday night with a 17-14 nail-biting win over the Villa Rica Wildcats.

The game featured a lot of defense early on, but the Colonels were able to strike first. Kaleb Speights connected on a 37-yard field goal to break a scoreless tie with exactly eight minutes to go in the first half. On the next Cass possession, David Gbadie punched in a 1-yard touchdown run which gave the Colonels a 10-0 lead at the half.

The third quarter also went in Cass’ favor as Tay Calhoun scored on a 72-yard run to give the Colonels a 17-0 lead with just over 16 minutes left in the game. Everything appeared to be in order for a Cass victory, but Villa Rica wouldn’t go away quietly.

The Wildcats scored 14 unanswered and still had 10 minutes of gameplay left. Both defenses stood strong but with 5:28 left in the contest Villa Rica had a chance to tie the game. However, a 40-yard field goal attempt sailed left and Cass had the football looking to run out the clock and preserve a win. But Villa Rica would get one more chance with the ball on its own 26-yard line. The Wildcats were unable to get much traction for a drive to convert to points and was unsuccessful on a 4th down conversion to seal the game for the Colonels with under a minute left.

The Colonels improved to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in region play. They will look to continue their hot start next week as they host the Rome Wolves at 7:30 PM Friday night.
