Last month, the Cartersville School Board released a statement opposing Georgia House Bill 684, which provided a homestead exemption from the schools’ ad valorem taxes in different amounts dependent on certain age thresholds. That bill received no action in the Georgia Senate.

During a business meeting at their office building Monday night, school board president Kelley Dial read a resolution in support of new legislation proposed by Senator Bruce Thompson.

In short, it calls for a referendum for voters to decided whether to increase the current exemption from the first $28,000 of a homestead’s assessed value to the first $60,000 with a sunset provision for December 31st 2027.

This resolution was unanimously approved by the school board. Tune into our local newscasts on Tuesday to hear more.
