The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes survived the Wayne County Yellow Jackets in the GHSA Quad-A State Quarterfinals on Thursday evening. The best of three match-up went Cartersville’s way after they won Game 3 Thursday night by a score of 4-3.
The Canes were led by a strong pitching performance from Elliott Anderson, who pitched 5.1 innings and allowed just two runs, struck out seven and drove in two runs with a double in the 5th inning. The Canes took a 3-2 lead into the seventh, but Wayne County’s Ford Townsend drove in the tying run with two outs in the seventh. Cartersville’s Jacob Fowler led off the seventh inning with a single and advanced to third after Anthony Seigler hit a slow grounder to the third baseman and no one covered third base. Anderson was then intentionally walked, so that Wayne County could face Carrington Evans, who was 3-17 in the playoffs entering the at bat. Evans promptly hit a ball into deep center, that hit off the wall for a game winning single.
Cartersville will next host the Buford Wolves on Monday, May 18th with the game time still to be announced. Stay tuned to AM 1450 WBHF for updates on Monday’s game. Don’t forget you can hear high school baseball playoff action live on AM 1450 WBHF, brought to you by Century Bank of Georgia.
