The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes moved to 9-0 (5-0) and set a new school record with their 24th consecutive win with a 48-7 win over the Chapel Hill Panthers in Douglasville. The 24th consecutive victory is also a current state-best.
The Canes spent a majority of the first half on the Chapel Hill side of the field with very good results. Trey Creamer put the Canes on the board 7-0 with a six-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. A stop by the Cartersville defense and a miscue by the Chapel Hill punter led to a Jonathan Cruz field goal making it 10-0 with 7:16 to go in the first quarter. Creamer added another touchdown for the Canes with a two-yard touchdown run making the score 17-0. Linebacker Sean Holton got in on the act for Cartersville with an interception that set up a Trase Fezzia touchdown reception to conclude the first quarter scoring 24-0 Canes. The lone Chapel Hill first-half highlight came when Quarterback Jadon Walker took a read option to the house to the house from 39 yards out 24-7. A field goal by Jonathan Cruz and receiving touchdowns by Antoine Jefferson and Avery Showell gave the Canes a 41-7 lead going into the half.
The running clock in the second half didn’t slow down the Cartersville offense as EJ Turner caught a screen pass and ran past the Panthers defense for a 54-yard touchdown making it 48-7 Canes.
With another large second half lead, the Canes were able to get much-needed field time for the backups.
The offense supplied the highlights but the Cartersville defense gave Trevor Lawrence and company short fields all night long.
Cartersville has a bye week next week but will play Troup County on November 4th for a home contest at 7:30 PM.
