A man and a woman were arrested Friday nearly a year after the death of their 17-month-old child.

Cherokee Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested 23-year-old Jamie Beck, of Bartow County, and 31-year-old Michael Naples, of Woodstock, and charged them both with murder and cruelty to children.

The investigation began on Oct. 14, 2012, when deputies were dispatched to an injured child call at the couple’s home in Woodstock. Deputies found the little girl, who was unresponsive. At the time, the mother told deputies she got up to get a glass of water and noticed the door to the basement was open. She then said she saw her daughter lying on the ground at the bottom of the stairs. The child, identified as Kaylee Rayne Johnson, was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, but died two days later as a result of her injuries.

Investigators received the final GBI Crime lab results in recent weeks, which listed the cause of death as “blunt force trauma to the head” and the manner of death as “homicide.” It was determined that the injuries to the child were not indicative of a child falling down stairs.

Both suspects are currently in custody at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center without bond.
