TAX COMMISSIONER STEVE STEWART ENCOURAGES ALL NEW HOMEOWNERS AND ANYONE WHO HAS MOVED OR HAD A NAME CHANGE REGARDING OWNERSHIP TO APPLY AT THE TAX COMMISSIONERS’ OFFICE FOR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION BEFORE THE DEADLINE.
ANYONE OWNING AND RESIDING IN THEIR HOME ON JANUARY 1ST CAN QUALIFY. STATE LAW REQUIRES APPLICATIONS TO BE FILED BEFORE APRIL 1ST OF THE YEAR IN WHICH THE EXEMPTION IS SOUGHT.
HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION WILL REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF PROPERTY TAX YOU MUST PAY ON YOUR RESIDENCE. RENTAL PROPERTY DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR ANY EXEMPTION.
SEVERAL TYPES OF HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONS HAVE BEEN ENACTED. ONCE GRANTED, THE HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION IS AUTOMATICALLY RENEWED EACH YEAR, UNLESS THE EXEMPTION IS BASED ON INCOME OR UNLESS YOUR DEED HAS CHANGED.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION, CONTACT THE TAX COMMISSIONERS’ OFFICE AT (770) 387-5111.
