Cartersville, GA; March 16, 2017: The 2016 Frist Humanitarian and HCA Excellence in Nursing Award winners were announced recently at Cartersville Medical Center. Created in 1971, the Frist Humanitarian Award honors outstanding individuals for their humanitarian and volunteer activities. The Excellence in Nursing Award celebrates the extraordinary clinical and compassionate care delivered by HCA nurses every day. Faye Leatherwood, employee, Barbara Butler, volunteer and Jarrod Collins, nurse, took home the company’s top honors.
Named in honor of Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr. (1910-1998), a founder of HCA (parent company of Cartersville Medical Center), the Frist Humanitarian Award recognizes individuals who serve the community and those in need and whose daily dedication and care giving epitomize the highest standards of quality and personal commitment.
Employee Recipient – Frist Humanitarian Award
The employee award recognizes a HCA-affiliated employee who goes beyond day-to-day responsibilities in his/her overall service to the community. A 37 year employee of Cartersville Medical Center, Faye Leatherwood was named the employee recipient of the Frist Humanitarian Award. Leatherwood’s career began at Sam Howell Hospital in 1979; she has worked in Patient Account Services and is currently a PBX operator.
Leatherwood’s community and volunteer involvement includes Relay for Life, March of Dimes, Backpack Buddies, Adairsville Visitor Center & Rail Depot Museum and Sans Souci Women’s Club in Adairsville. She is a poll worker for elections, takes friends to doctor appointments and even cuts the grass regularly at Adairsville First United Methodist Church, where she is an active member and a Vacation Bible School volunteer. In the past, she also delivered meals to homebound individuals each Wednesday night.
Leatherwood’s current manager and previous supervisors know they can always count on her to work when needed, arrive on time, and show warmth and friendliness to all visitors and other employees at the hospital. She is trusted, appreciated, and cared for by her coworkers.
In her spare time, Leatherwood enjoys gardening, cooking and catching up on a good book. Above all, Faye loves spending time with her children, Luke and Carla, and grandchildren, Will, Christina and Stetson.
Volunteer Recipient – Frist Humanitarian Award
A volunteer at Cartersville Medical Center for over seven years, Barbara Butler was named the volunteer recipient of the Frist Humanitarian Award. Butler has volunteered more than 2,000 hours at Cartersville Medical Center and currently serves as team leader for outpatient services. Her husband, Bernie, also volunteers at the hospital.
Described as extremely kind, caring and dedicated to serving patients and visitors at CMC, Butler is also a Court Appointed Special Advocate, providing a sense of stability and hope for children who are transitioning out of their home and entering into the foster care system. A retired educator, Butler taught sixth grade and also directed school plays and musicals during her tenure.
Married 60 years, Barbara and Bernie are active members at Roland Springs Baptist Church. They enjoy spending time with their children, Bernie, Jr. and Bonnie, and their grandchildren, Josh and Emily.
HCA Excellence in Nursing Award Recipient
The recipient of the 2016 HCA Excellence in Nursing Award is Jarrod Collins, LPN, medical-surgical floor nurse at Cartersville Medical Center.
A nurse at Cartersville Medical Center since 2005, Collins is currently an employee on the Med Surg 2-North unit, but has worked in many other areas throughout the years including Med Surg 2-Central, Post-Surgical and the Emergency Department. Collins started his career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and is currently pursuing his nursing degree through the LPN to RN bridge program at Georgia Highlands College in Cartersville.
Known for his willingness to orient nurses on his unit and for being an amazing and motivating teacher for new employees, Collins is exceptionally patient and goes out of his way to ensure new nurses receive the best, most in depth orientation to provide the best care possible.
Collins is well-respected by his peers for treating guests, patients, and fellow employees with dignity, valuing each individual, and taking great personal pride in those compassionate interactions.
In his free time, Collins enjoys spending time with his wife, Faith, and their four children, Cody, Ashton, Milani, and Noah, along with one grandchild. He also enjoys cheering on his favorite sports teams: the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons and Georgia Bulldogs.
