Cartersville baseball player Preston Welchel has committed to play his college baseball at South Alabama. Preston, a junior center fielder who bats and throws left-handed is expected to fill that role for the Jaguars. He plays for the East Cobb Astros in the summer and has played in Perfect Game underclassmen All-American showcase games. Welchel will be joining a South Alabama program that has won the Sun Belt conference three of the last five seasons and has had seven players drafted in the MLB Draft in the last three years.

Four local motocross athletes took home trophies during an event in Calhoun. Scotty Guyton Jr. who attends Hamilton Crossing Elementary placed second in the 65cc ages 7 to 9 and won the 7 to 11 unlimited division. Ryan Allen of Kingston won the supermini and 85cc races for ages 12-15. Jackson Stover who attends Cartersville Middle School won the 85cc race for ages 9-11D and placed fourth overall in the series. Kash Thacker of Adairsville won the overall in 85cc for ages 9 to 11. He also won the 85cc for ages 9 to 13 and finished first overall in the series. All four racers will race at the new Mercedes-Benz Dome in 2018.

Cass will kickoff the LakePointe Basketball Showcase at the LakePointe Champions Center with a game against Lithia Springs at 3 PM on Saturday, December 16th. The showcase, in its second year,  consists of 4 games. Lassiter and North Paulding in the second game with North Cobb Christian immediately following. The final game of the showcase will feature McCallie (TN) and Cobb powerhouse Allatoona.
