Grady David Sanford, Jr. from Gordon County has been appointed as commander of Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Troop A. Troop A is comprised of patrol posts located in Cartersville, Dalton, Jasper, Paulding, Rome, LaFayette, and Calhoun which cover 20 counties in northwest Georgia. Troop A headquarters is located in Cartersville.

 

Capt. Sanford began his career with the Department of Public Safety in 1987 as a radio operator at GSP Calhoun. In 1988, he was promoted to Trooper Cadet in April and graduated from the 63rd Trooper School in October. He was assigned to GSP Cartersville after graduation. In 1992, he transferred to GSP Calhoun and worked there until his promotion to Corporal at GSP Kennesaw in 1997. After being promoted to Corporal, he progressed through the ranks to Sergeant at GSP Cedartown in 2000; to Sergeant First Class (Post Commander) at GSP Calhoun in 2001; to Lieutenant (Assistant Director of GSP Training Division) in 2003; and to Captain (Troop B Commander) in 2011. His most recent position was director of the Capitol Police Division from July 1, 2012 to present.

 

Capt. Sanford received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Thomas University, and a Masters of Public Administration degree from Columbus State University. Capt. Sanford is also a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College (Class 46) and the FBI National Academy (242nd Session). He currently serves as the 1st Vice President of the Georgia Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates.

 

Capt. Sanford was born and raised in Gordon County.  He is married to the former Raina Mauldin and has two children, Stefanie and Elex.
