The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes (5-0, 1-0) defeated the Cedartown (2-2, 0-1) on Friday night by a score of 44-6 to open up their region schedule.

Cartersville scored first thanks to a touchdown reception by Trey Creamer, who scored on a 51-yard swing pass with 9:22 left in the first quarter. The PAT was blocked. Cartersville’s next possession would be intercepted and returned for a touchdown to tie the game up at 6 following a blocked PAT. That’s when everything looked to unravel for the Canes offense.

Trace Fezzia had a kickoff return called back after a penalty and Creamer fumbled at the Cartersville 47. The Canes would get a touchdown, as Trevor Lawrence hit Jacoby Orr for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Canes a 13-6 lead with 11:56 left in the second quarter. That’s what changed the tide for the Cartersville offense and defense. Nyvin Nelson intercepted a Cedartown pass, which set the Cartersville offense up at the 5-yard line for a score. Fezzia would be the next Cartersville defender to pick off a pass and just miss a touchdown, as he was tackled at the Cedartown 1-yard line. Lawrence would find Orr again to convert more points off Cedartown turnovers. That pass would give the Canes a 34-6 lead.

Cedartown’s offense proved stingy in the second half as it would only allow 10 Cartersville points, but the damage had already been done. The Canes 44-6 victory gave them their first region victory and improved their win streak to 19 games.

Cartersville will host Central Carroll next week at 7:30 and you can hear that game on AM 1450 WBHF also on FM 100.3.
