CartersvillePurpleHurricanesFBhelmetThe Cartersville Purple Hurricanes (11-1) defeated the Baldwin Braves (7-5) on Friday night in the second round of the AAAA State Playoffs by a score of 41-10. The Braves held tough with Cartersville in the first half, and at one time was tied with the Canes at 3 a piece.  The Canes offense began to click following an interception by freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence, however.  Taimon Pennymon had two big runs and Lawrence found Terrius Calahan for a pass-and-catch, giving the game its first touchdown. The Canes never looked back and took a 17-3 lead into the half and had 38 unanswered points before the Braves finally got into the endzone in the fourth quarter. The Canes were able to capitalize on shoddy special teams play by the Braves which resulted in several poor punts, a missed field goal and several special teams turnovers. The Canes will host another playoff game next week when they play the Sandy Creek Patriots (11-1), the No. 2 seed in Cartersville’s pod. The game will air on AM 1450 WBHF at 7:30, with pre-game coverage beginning at 6:00.
